Pawtopia Began with a Question
How can we help not just one dog, but thousands, and build something that can keep helping them?
It Began with Sonali.
A few years ago, I found a little dog playing outside our home in the rain. We already had dogs inside, but leaving her there was never really an option. My mom and I brought her in, dried and warmed her, gave her some food and found her a little jacket. We named her Sonali.
Sonali had a life inside our home and another outside it. She had friends among the neighbourhood dogs, so we never stopped her from going out to play with them. She would go out for a few hours every afternoon, and every evening she would return home. Slowly, she was finding her place and making friends with our other dogs too.
One day, Sonali went out as usual to play with her friends. I was getting ready to go somewhere when I heard a dog cry out. The sound caught my attention for a moment, but I had no idea what it meant. It was very brief, so I let it go.
When I returned home that evening, Sonali’s bed was empty. I thought she may have decided to stay out with her friends. The following day, Sonali still hadn’t returned, and I noticed that the other community dogs, her friends, were missing too. None of them were coming around as they normally did.
That was when I connected the dots and understood what had happened. The sound I had heard that night had been Sonali, screaming out as a dog-culling team got her. Even today, after so many years, I can still hear her tiny, innocent scream.
Sonali never came home. Neither did her friends.
I cried for days.
But then I wiped my tears and made a promise to Sonali, her friends, and the countless playful, gentle and loving dogs across the country who disappear from streets and communities overnight.
That promise is Pawtopia.
Turning a Promise into a Plan
I kept returning to one question:
How can we build something that creates its own income, sustains its own welfare work and keeps growing?
Donations save lives and remain essential to animal welfare. I wanted Pawtopia to create an additional path: experiences, services and products that people genuinely value, with the income helping care continue every day.
Slowly, one idea connected with another. A sanctuary grew into a wider vision encompassing food, water, veterinary care, awareness, play and storytelling.
Together, these ideas became a self-sustaining ecosystem designed to keep helping dogs.
That is how Pawtopia began to take shape.
The Future Sonali Deserved
Sonali deserved a world where she could play outside and still come home safely.
That is the future Pawtopia is working towards: dogs with food, water, care and protection; safe and joyful spaces for those who need them; and communities that understand dogs rather than fear them.
It Takes a Village
Lasting change cannot come from one person or organisation. It takes animal welfare professionals, communities, public institutions, businesses and people willing to see dogs differently.
Pawtopia is designed to bring these efforts together, practically, respectfully and with one shared purpose.
The Story Continues
Pawtopia began with Sonali, but it cannot end with her. Every dog protected and every life made safer becomes part of the promise made that day.
